YMAC Elders continue the fight undeterred by unsuccessful section 9 application.

For immediate release

June 1, 2026

Gaja Kerry Charlton and the Yagara Magandjin Elders will continue the fight to protect Victoria Park/Barrambin, despite Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt’s decision not to halt works at the site.

The Elders said the decision is a setback, but it does not diminish Barrambin’s cultural significance to their group or its shared heritage with many others.

YMAC Elders remain committed to pursuing long-term protection for Barrambin through their Section 10 application under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act.

YMAC calls on the State Government and GIICA to exercise due diligence in cultural monitoring and to ensure all cultural heritage matters are properly protected. This includes ensuring any artefacts or remains are treated lawfully and in accordance with existing cultural heritage obligations.

We acknowledge the efforts of all those who have fought to protect Barrambin and those who continue to walk in solidarity with us.
