Press Statement: New Heritage Listing Reinforces Need to Protect Victoria Park Barrambin from Olympic Stadiums

Friday 5 September 2025

Advocacy group Save Victoria Park welcomes the Queensland Heritage Council’s decision to include the entirety of Victoria Park Barrambin on the state’s heritage register.

The listing affirms the park’s rich environmental and cultural heritage, further reinforcing the need to protect it from destructive Olympic stadium developments.

“We appreciate the important work undertaken by the Queensland Heritage Council to expand the park’s listing on the state register,” said Save Victoria Park spokesperson Sue Bremner.

"We are, however, highly concerned by recent comments from the Heritage Council Chair suggesting that the Crisafulli Government’s mega stadiums could “enhance” the park’s heritage values.

“We disagree. You cannot build two Olympic stadiums, a warm-up track and extensive supporting infrastructure while honouring the park’s heritage in any meaningful way. The two things are incompatible.

“The scale and size of these stadium developments will destroy almost everything that recommends this park for state heritage listing in the first place.

“It is also surprising that a Heritage Council Chair would express support for these proposed developments without even knowing the extent to which the stadiums will impact the park’s cultural heritage. This type of preemptive decision-making is highly unusual.

“Our firm and unwavering view is that Brisbane can have stadiums and a heritage park - just not in the same place.”
